The academic council of Mumbai University (MU) finally gives a green signal to K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering (KJSCE), Vidyavihar, allowing it to enjoy an autonomous status starting 2013-14 academic year.
KJSCE was trying to seek autonomoy for over four years and after a long wait, the council approved the status on Tuesday, February 27th. "The council also instituted three new courses in engineering - Fire Engineering, Material Technology and Water Source Engineering,” said the dean of technology, Suresh Ukrande.
The prime reason for colleges to seek autonomous is that they can set their own academic curriculum and syllabus, conduct their own exams and obviously get a better, high scoring passing percentage. Currently, Mumbai University affiliated autonomous institutes are the prestigious Veermata Jijabai Technological Insitute (VJTI), Matunga, and the equally popular Sardar Patel College of Engineering (SPCE), Andheri.
